GRAYSCALE OUTFLOWS WON’T STOP 📉 For a second let’s pretend that Grayscale’s ETHE doesn’t exist… If that were the case, net inflows into the Ethereum ETFs would be just over $2 billion. And they’ve only been trading for 4 weeks. Let’s put that $2 billion into context… If the Ethereum ETFs were viewed as one, $2 billion would make them the 4th best ETF launch of the year. The three ETFs above them would all be Bitcoin ETFs. (BlackRock’s IBIT, Fidelity’s FBTC & ARK’s ARKB) On it’s own, BlackRock’s ETHA is the 7th most successful ETF launched this year. ETH flows But… Unfortunately Grayscale’s ETHE is a thing we cannot ignore. 😥 And so far it’s experienced net outflows of $2.5 billion. ETHE has really put a damper on the Ethereum ETFs which have seen net outflows of $458.5 million since launch. (when ETHE is included in the equation) ETHE’s outflows can also only go on for so long… With Ethereum’s recent price performance, the fund has ~$4.9 billion in assets under management. It could be a while before net flows into the Ethereum ETFs turn positive… Show more

ETHEREUM GAS FEES PLUMMETING 📉 BREAKING: Record Drop in Ethereum gas fees marks historically bullish signal for ETH ETH Ethereum gas fees have been in free-fall since March 2024. And now they’ve just crossed their lowest point in the last 5 years… What’s going on? Gas fees A quick side note for those of you who are new to crypto: Gas refers to the fees a user must pay to perform a transaction on the Ethereum network. And there’s a clear reason why gas fees are plummeting. Right now, there simply isn’t that much demand for Ethereum block space. HOWEVER… That doesn’t mean that the Ethereum network is dying. In fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Transaction count Layer 2 transaction count Layer 2 networks have been popping off this year. These L2’s are built on top of Ethereum with the aim of reducing transaction fees and increasing transaction speed. Essentially a MUCH cheaper and faster way to interact with the Ethereum network. And as you can see from the chart above, transaction counts have never been higher. (they’re just taking place on L2’s instead of the mainnet) Taking a look at Ethereum’s Transactions per second (TPS), we also observe the same trend. When taking all Layer 2’s into account, Ethereum’s TPS has never been higher. Ethereum is actually processing 26.78x more transactions per second then when it launched. That’s massive. Scaling factor BUT… Due to the way Ethereum works, lower gas prices mean less ETH being burnt. (a portion of every gas fee is permanently removed from the ETH supply) Which results in Ethereum becoming inflationary. And that’s exactly what is going on right now. Over the last 30 days, ETH has been inflationary at a rate of 0.612% per year. inflationary A steep drop in gas fees could also be a bullish sign… That’s what Bitget Research’s Chief analyst Ryan Lee believes: “Every time ETH gas fees drop to rock bottom, it has often signalled a price bottom in the mid-term… ETH prices tend to strongly rebound after this cycle, and when this moment coincides with an interest rate cut cycle, the market's wealth effect is full of possibilities.” Ryan Lee, Chief analyst at Bitget Research Could Ethereum be about to explode? 🚀 Show more

OUTFLOWS ARE HERE 📉 BREAKING: US spot bitcoin ETFs saw $168 million in net outflows yesterday amid market turbulence Bitcoin The last few days have been tough to say the least… But now that the markets have seemingly begun to recover, let’s take a look at what’s going on with the ETFs. Did the ETF holders buy or sell? Let’s start with Bitcoin. And… Unfortunately, yesterday the Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $168.4 million. Here’s the breakdown: Grayscale BTC: $21.8 million 🥇 VanEck HODL: $3.0 million 🥈 Bitwise BITB: $2.9 million 🥉 Bitcoin One of the most surprising things here is Fidelity’s outflow streak is now up to 6 days in a row (-$250.9 million). BlackRock also recorded a neutral day of $0. ETF analyst Eric Balchunas also noted that this outflow is only ~0.3% of the total assets under management. That’s basically nothing compared to the selloff’s seen in other markets. EB tweet Now onto Ethereum. And things were much better on this front… Yesterday the Ethereum ETFs saw net inflows of $48.8 million. (biggest day since launch) Here’s the breakdown: BlackRock ETHA: $47.1 million 🥇 VanEck ETHV: $16.6 million 🥈 Fidelity FETH: $16.2 million 🥉 Grayscale’s ETHE was the only fund to record an outflow on the day, with -$46.8 million. It looks like investors took the opportunity to buy the Ethereum dip. Ethereum However… In total, the Ethereum ETFs are still sitting on net outflows of $462.4 million since launch. But the outflows from Grayscale’s ETHE are definitely slowing down. Show more

WHAT IS GOING ON? 📉 BREAKING: Bitcoin plunges below $50,000, ether under $2,200 amid Jump Crypto moves, US election uncertainty Bitcoin Everything is f*cked… It’s rough out there… Everything is crashing, not just Bitcoin and crypto… The recent crash accelerated on Sunday, sending Bitcoin back to levels not seen since February. And Ethereum plunging to prices not seen since December. But what caused this crash? Well, the Bank of Japan (Japan’s central bank) is to blame… japan Last week, The Bank of Japan raised interest rates from a range of 0% - 0.1% to 0.25%. This resulted in the Japanese Yen shooting higher and the stock market tumbling. Increased rates in Japan also resulted in the USD-JPY carry trade unwinding… Now this is a pretty complex topic but here’s a quick breakdown on how it works: An investor borrows in a currency with low interest rates, such as the yen, and reinvests the proceeds in a currency with a higher rate of return. (like USD) If you’d like to learn more about the carry trade, click here to watch an excellent explanation. liquidations This unwinding of the JPY-USD carry trade eventually found its way to the US, where the stock market began to collapse. watcher guru But according to Hunter Horsley, clients aren’t panic selling. But this is when things get nuts… That’s the latest from Crypto Nutshell’s very own Jamin Currie. Jamin Currie In our latest YouTube video (you should really subscribe if you haven’t already…) Jamin broke down exactly what’s going on with the market right now. And why you should be bullish for the rest of August… First things first, Jamin broke down recent price action. We’ve been chopping around the $60,000 to $70,000 price range for what feels like an eternity. 😴 But if we take a look back to the launch of the Bitcoin ETFs something very interesting happened. Bitcoin initially crashed 20% before rallying over 90% in the following two months. Bitcoin Bitcoin price movement Jamin explains: “The market has been digesting this move. 90% in under two months is huge and of course it’s going to take some time, there will always be some sellers at new all-time highs. Prices can’t go parabolically upwards forever.” Jamin Currie And Ethereum’s price action has been extremely similar. ETH rallied heavily and since then has been trading within the $3,000 to $4,000 range. Ethereum Ethereum price movement The purple marker on the chart above indicates the launch of the Ethereum ETFs. And so far, that has also been playing out extremely similar to Bitcoin. Since the launch, Ethereum has dipped by 18%. Is history repeating itself? Possibly… Here’s what Jamin has to say on recent price movements: “The current crash is nothing out of the ordinary. It’s nothing to panic about. In both of the charts, it’s moving up and down consolidating between $3,000 and $4,000 for ETH and $60,000 and $70,000 for BTC.” Jamin Currie But, what’s been keeping Bitcoin in this range? US unemployment numbers coming in higher than expected - recession looming The Fed has left interest rates steady - rate cuts are likely coming in September Mt. Gox began distributing coins back to creditors in July (~$9 billion worth of BTC) German government sold off ~50,000 BTC Miner Capitulation - Inefficient miners closing down operations and selling Bitcoin US election - markets hate uncertainty, and this uncertainty has extended to crypto regulations So as you can see there’s been quite a lot of bearish events holding Bitcoin and crypto back recently. But there’s some good news here… Mt. Gox is roughly 80% through it’s distribution process and Germany has completely sold off all of its Bitcoin. And according to on-chain analyst Willy Woo, Miner capitulation is now over! Plus the Fed is likely to begin rate cuts in September of this year (we broke this down in yesterday’s newsletter). So that’s a summary of current market conditions. And to find out why Jamin is bullish for the rest of August you’ll need to watch the full video… (sorry, we had to do it) Trust us, it’s worth it. THE TABLES HAVE TURNED 🔄 How have the Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs been doing this week? Let’s kick things off with Bitcoin. And unfortunately it’s not great… Yesterday, the Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $18.3 million. Oddly enough, BlackRock was the only issuer to see inflows yesterday with $74.9 million. Grayscale, ARK Invest, VanEck all saw net outflows of $73.6m, $7.9m & $5.6m respectively. BTC flows BUT… On the Ethereum side, things were a little different. The Ethereum ETFs saw their first net inflow day since launch, with $33.7 million coming in. Here’s the breakdown: BlackRock ETHA: $118.0 million 🥇 Fidelity FETH: $16.4 million 🥈 Grayscale ETH: $12.4 million 🥉 (this is the mini Ethereum ETF spinoff by the way) Grayscale’s ETHE (their Ethereum trust conversion) saw net outflows of $120.3 million. Ethereum ETF With only $120.3 million flowing out of ETHE, the rate of outflow is already slowing down. Checkout the chart below for a comparison of outflows between GBTC and ETHE. You can clearly see how rapid the ETHE outflows were out the gate. 🏃 GBTC That’s why we’ve maintained that Ethereum has held up considerably well despite significant outflows from Grayscale. (price of ETH is down ~5% in the last 7 days) But now that net inflows are back on the menu… The price of ETH could start rocketing up soon. 🚀 Show more

WERE THE ETHEREUM ETFs A FAILURE? 🤔 The Ethereum ETFs have now been live for one week. So how did they shape up? Let’s take a look. WERE THE ETHEREUM ETFs A FAILURE? 🤔 The Ethereum ETFs have now been live for one week. So how did they shape up? Let’s take a look. First things first, total net flows were -$341.8 million… But if we exclude Grayscale from the equation, the Ethereum ETFs saw net inflows of $1.14 billion. (which is seriously impressive) ETH The outflows from Grayscale have been WAY more than anyone was expecting. The first four days of trading saw $1.51 billion flow OUT of Grayscale’s ETHE. The entire fund only had $9.2 billion in assets under management to begin with… So that’s 16.41% of the entire fund leaving within four days, which is absolutely ridiculous. (ETHE launched as a conversion from Grayscale’s Ethereum Trust, that’s why is has $9.2 billion in AUM to begin with) EB tweet It looks like we’ll get over the Grayscale outflows much quicker this time. But we’ve been here before… Just take a look at what happened to Bitcoin when the ETFs launched back in January. btc etfs Bitcoin crashed ~20% (in two weeks) before going on a huge rally and setting a new all-time high. As it stands, Ethereum is ‘only’ down 7.69% over the last week. So when you put it like that…. It’s really not that bad. And is holding up pretty well considering the large amount of outflows from Grayscale. Show more

WE’RE STILL EARLY 🌊 Despite the launch of the Ethereum ETFs this week… We’re unlikely to see other crypto ETFs like Solana anytime soon. (at least from the likes of BlackRock) That’s the latest out from Robert Mitchnick. Robert Mitchnick For those of you who don’t know Robert, he’s the Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock. He’s also known on the streets as the man that orange-pilled Larry Fink. 👏 Speaking at Bitcoin 2024, Robert gave some insights into the Bitcoin ETFs. And according to him, we’re still early… BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF has three main client segments: Direct investors - small dollar retail to ultra high net worth investing on their own accord Wealth advisory Institutional Out of those three, direct investors came storming out of the gates on launch day. But we’re still waiting on the wealth advisory and institutional sectors to come online. (some have but it’s only a small percentage) It takes a LONG time for these platforms to finish their due diligence. Robert was asked when can expect these platforms to start offering the Bitcoin ETFs. This is what he had to say: “I won’t get into specific names and timelines obviously, but certainly this year is likely.” Robert Mitchnick Sounds like another wave of demand is coming. 🌊 Robert was then asked what are BlackRock’s clients currently interested in. “Our client base today, their interest overwhelmingly is in Bitcoin first. And then somewhat in Ethereum, there’s definitely interest in ETH too. And there’s very little interest today beyond those two.” Robert Mitchnick Solana maxis, time to look away… Robert expanded on the point he made above, stating that Bitcoin and Ethereum are the 2 dominant crypto assets. Beyond that point, there really is nothing of considerable size. “I don’t think we’re going to see a long list of crypto ETFs. If you look at Bitcoin today, it’s 55% of the market. Ethereum is at 18%. The next plausible investable asset is at like 3%. There’s just nothing close to being at that threshold of track record, maturity, liquidity etc that BTC and ETH have.” Robert Mitchnick It doesn’t sound like BlackRock is interested in launching a Solana ETF anytime soon. Robert also explained how he differentiates BTC and ETH to clients: “We don’t view BTC and ETH as competitors. Bitcoin is trying to be a global monetary alternative, as a potential global payment system. Ethereum isn’t really trying to be that. ETH is trying to do a bunch of different applications. So really they’re more compliments than they are competitors.” Robert Mitchnick It’s a ‘rising tide lifts all boats’ kind of situation. At their core, Bitcoin and Ethereum aren’t competing with each other. They serve completely different use cases. The launch of the Ethereum ETFs has been a huge benefit to the crypto industry as a whole. Show more
